Description:
Saariaho was in the international spotlight from the 1980s until his death in 2023. Although his flute pieces and operas are especially highly acclaimed, this album contains all of his works written for piano and harpsichord. It is performed by Hakkila, an old instrumentalist and at the same time a longtime leader of Finland's contemporary music scene. He has been in close contact with Saariaho for more than 40 years, and this album is a tribute to his good friend. The "Prelude" at the beginning of the album is based on the first piece from the song collection "Four Moments. It is characterized by repetitive minimalist movements. Arabesque and Adagio" is inspired by the work of sculptor Jean Tinguely. Autumn" is an arrangement for harp solo for harpsichord from the ballet music "Maa," premiered by Hakkila, with electronics by Saariaho. Delicately is a contemplative piece, arranged by Hakkila himself from a movement of Serenata for cello, piano and percussion. In a Dream" for cello and prepared piano shows his avant-garde style. The "Ballade" is based on the second piece from the song cycle "Four Moments."Monkey Fingers, Hands of Velvet" is a miniature etude commissioned by Aki Takahashi, quoting a Beatles melody. It features a powerful ostinato. The Secret Garden II" is a work in which Saariaho, a great lover of the harpsichord, captured his own breathing sounds on tape and fused them with the sound of the harpsichord. Naxos Japan
