In this album with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, one of the world's leading orchestras for ancient instruments, Vox Luminis presents three masterpieces by Bach and Telemann for the Ascension Festival, which celebrates the ascension to heaven of Jesus, the Savior who was resurrected after dying on the cross. The \"Ascension Festival Oratorio,\" a substantial work from the latter part of Bach's career in which trumpet and timpani add to the festive atmosphere, is a masterpiece of flexibility in sound production that is not overpowered by the power of a large ensemble. The remaining two works are from the period shortly after Telemann and Bach took over as music directors of Hamburg and Leipzig, respectively, and both are masterpieces from the 1720s with beautiful, full, natural horn sounds. The natural brass sounds beautifully in the upper register, and the instrumentalists, led by concertmaster Laila Shayek, Sonoko Asabuki on viola, Xavier Safra on bassoon, and Lee Santana on lute, provide brilliant support. The singers include Zsuzi Toth, who has sung with Herreweghe, Kei Mizukoshi, who is also active in the Bach Collegium Japan, and Alexander Chance, who has made remarkable strides in recent years. This is a wonderful album that brings us a glimpse of the vibrant European scene of classical music through music that celebrates the spring in German-speaking countries.
