Atterberg began composing a fairy tale opera for adults in 1936 and completed it in 1941. The story is about Aladdin, who is enchanted by the princess Laila and grants her wishes with the help of a magic lamp, but in this opera version, the emphasis is on the \"love\" between the two heroes rather than on their adventures. The opera premiered at the Royal Swedish Opera House in March 1941 and was performed 11 times. The German premiere took place in the same year with some success, but it did not appear on the stage again until 2017 at the Braunschweig State Theatre, where it is recorded here. In this staging, the script has been slightly altered and the setting moved to Soviet-era Central Asia. The careful and passionate singing and orchestral sound show the enthusiasm of the singers for the revival.
