Bach: Motet Collection - Import CD

Credits:

Valentin Tournet, La Chapelle Harmonique

Description:

The new generation of French conductors, led by Valentin Tournet, made their impressive CD debut in 2019 with the recording of the premiere version of Bach's "Magnificat" (CVS009/NYCX-10097). The Chateau de Versailles Spectacles label has since released lush recordings of operas such as Rameau's "Elegant Indian Countries" (CVS031) and "Les Paradins" (CVS054), This motet recording is another remarkable example of their deep love for Bach's works. The small vocal ensemble, consisting of two or three members per part in double chorus, is joined by two violins, two violas, one cello, one double bass, two oboes, one middle-range oboe, one bassoon, and an organ. The instrumental team, including David Plantier on violin, Benoit Laurent on oboe, François Guerrier on organ, and other veteran musicians, does more than simply assist the chorus; the colorful interplay of multiple voices creates a rich image of the work that is different from that of a capella. In the motet by Johann Christoph Bach, whose relatives greatly influenced the great Bach, the pitch is set separately, with the instrumental instruments using a comma tone (A=390Hz) and the chorus using a chorus tone (A=465Hz), in accordance with some Baroque customs, and the difference in pitch of about three minor degrees is corrected by reading the notes in E♭ (instrumentalists in E♭). This is an interesting attempt to get closer to the acoustic sense of the time. The program also includes a recording of the 17th-century composer Knüpfer, who was a transcriber of the great Bach himself, and is an excellent way of highlighting the connection between the German tradition and Bach.
