Michael Praetorius was a composer active in Germany during the 16th and 17th centuries. His "Musae sioniae Zioniae", a collection of over 1,000 chorales and hymn arrangements, is known for its contribution to the development and popularization of Protestant hymnody. In this album, a selection of Christmas hymns from his vast oeuvre is presented in exquisite harmony by the Southwest German Radio Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Marcus Creed. Most of the pieces are written in two (bicinia) or three (tricinia) voices, and even when complex counterpoint is used, every detail of every voice can be carefully appreciated. Naxos Japan
