Mahler himself wrote the lyrics and set the music to music based on Grimm's fairy tales and Bechstein's stories. Unfortunately, it was not selected for the \"Beethoven Prize,\" a composition competition sponsored by the Musikverein in Vienna. He made numerous revisions, eventually deleting the first part of the three-part work. He also modified the orchestration, making it a different work from its original form. During the \"First Mahler Renaissance\" of the 1960s, the two-part form of the revised version was the norm, but eventually the deleted first part was added back, and near the end of the 20th century, the original version was published and performed more often. This Guillen disc combines the first part of the first draft version with the second and third parts of the revised version. Guillen's conducting carefully depicts the first part, which expresses the atmosphere of a thick forest, and the third part, in which a gorgeous wedding scene turns into a tumultuous one.
