This album features 10 Petit Motets written by Charpentier for Lent, the period leading up to the day before Easter, and two motets by Brossard from the same period. During this season, it is customary to spend time in self-restraint and contemplation of the reason for Jesus' death, that is, the sins of mankind, and for this reason, religious compositions for worship were kept to a minimum. Although Charpentier was shut out by Lully, the director of music for the French royal family, he was highly regarded by various religious organizations in Paris and left many masterpieces, including many small-format works for Lent. His Lenten Meditations is a masterpiece of all masterpieces, with a beautifully serene expression in the male voice. Brossard, on the other hand, is a well-known collector of sheet music, but his own works have not been recorded very often, so this is a good coupling to contrast his style with that of Charpentier, a contemporary. The new recording, including instrumental tracks by Marais and de Vizier, is the height of sophistication of French-speaking players of ancient music.
