Description:

American pianist and composer Persichetti (1915-1987). Although many of his wind band works are known in Japan, his legacy includes nine symphonies and a wide range of other genres. Most of his organ works were written in his later years, and many of the works on this album are world premiere recordings. Some of the pieces are based on hymns, and the melodies are generally woven sparingly into the works, but in the "Oden Variations" they are played on a high note and offer a taste of colorful harmonies reminiscent of Messiaen or Hindemith. The pedal-only "Do not go gentle," inspired by a poem by Dylan Thomas, is a statement of rigorous power. Master Winpenny fully expresses his attachment to Persichetti's organ works, having played the organ since boyhood. (C)RS
