The SOMMRecordings debut of Vukotich on cello and Firsova on piano features a duo of three great 20th century Russian master composers, as well as a tribute to three great 20th century Russian cello masters, Piatigorsky, Gutman and Rostropovich. The album is also a tribute to the three great Russian cello masters of the 20th century, Piatigorsky, Gutman and Rostropovich. Schnittke's Sonata No. 2 has a modern flavor, while the Sonata No. 1 has a romantic lyricism, Smirnov's "Tiriel" was inspired by William Blake, and Stravinsky's Suite and Schnittke's Musica nostalgica lean toward neoclassicism. These five contrasting works demonstrate the diversity of contemporary Russian music. Vukotich is a founding member of the Tippett String Quartet. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music with Rostropovich's favorite pupil, Stefan Popov. Filsova is a pianist who made her BBC Proms debut in 2009. She is also a composer and conductor, and is the beloved daughter of composer Smirnov, who is performing here. Naxos Japan
