Johann Kuhnau, a German Baroque composer known for his "Biblical Sonata" for harpsichord and many other works for keyboard, succeeded Johann Sierle as cantor of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig in 1701, a position he held until his death in 1722. He also left a large number of religious works. This series is based on a project to record all of his religious works, and the various cantatas, including the Magnificat and Missa Brevis, are performed by the Camerata Lipsiensis under the direction of Gregor Meyer, using the recently published comparative editions that are of great scholarly value. In the fifth collection, we hear five cantatas, including the text "Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied Sing unto the Lord a new song," a favorite text of this period. This beautiful performance combines the well-balanced sound of the winds and strings with the simple sound of the chorus. Naxos Japan
