Thomas, Ambroise (1911-96)

Description:

Featured soprano Sabine Deuvielle. Thomas' beautiful operas come back to life in the modern age! In 19th century Paris, Shakespeare's plays, which were popular at the time, gave birth to numerous operas. Among them, "Hamlet" was particularly popular, and several composers used it as the basis for their operas. Michel Carré and Jules Barbier, who had previously collaborated with Thomas, created a libretto that altered the tragic ending of Shakespeare's original, in which Hamlet, after defeating Claudius, proclaims himself King of Denmark. Although the work was a great success at its premiere, it was a "visionary work" that gradually lost its chance to be performed, but has been revisited in recent years and is now being performed more frequently. In Thomas' original conception, the role of Amourette was intended to be played by a tenor, but since there were no good singers available, a baritone was chosen to play the leading role. Degoux's singing in this production is superb, surpassing the great singers who have sung the role in the past...Cheryl Milnes, Thomas Hampson, Thomas Allen, and Simon Keenlyside.Sabine de Vielle, who sings Ofeli, is a soprano who has attracted attention for her works of ancient music and is currently very active in Europe. She is known for her lovely appearance and solid technique, and in this work, she delivers a superb "frenzy scene. Louis Langrée brings out a clear sound from the orchestra, and Cyril Test's direction moves the stage to the present day, using simple devices to beautifully portray the depths of the characters' psychology.
