In 19th century Paris, Shakespeare's plays, which were popular at the time, gave birth to numerous operas. Among them, "Hamlet" was particularly popular, and several composers used it as the basis for their operas. Michel Carré and Jules Barbier, who had previously collaborated with Thomas, created a libretto that altered the tragic ending of Shakespeare's original, in which Hamlet, after defeating Claudius, proclaims himself King of Denmark. Although the work was a great success at its premiere, it was a "visionary work" that gradually lost its chance to be performed, but has been revisited in recent years and is now being performed more frequently. In Thomas' original conception, the role of Amourette was intended to be played by a tenor, but since there were no good singers available, a baritone was chosen to play the leading role.
