Sammartini, Giovanni (1700-1775)
Description:
Born into an Italian musical family (his father and brother were also musicians), Giovanni Battista Sammartini spent most of his life in Milan, where he served as organist at several churches. While writing many religious works, he also composed symphonies for concerts and is praised as a pioneer symphony composer. His works were so popular in other countries that many of his students, including Gluck, came to study with him, further enhancing his reputation. Although he was blessed with a long life and left many works, relatively few works for keyboard (organ or harpsichord) have survived, with only about 40 pieces. The style of the works in this album are from the later period, and are written in the Gallant style (melody and accompaniment are clearly presented without complicated counterpoint), which was a transition from the Baroque to the Classical style of the time. Hager, who is currently teaching at the Milan Conservatory, is active as a soloist and ensemble player. The order of the pieces on this album is not based on the date of composition, but rather on the order that Hager considers most appropriate.
