Kuna's "The Great Kuna's "The Great" Kuna's "The Great" is well known for the 1957 recording with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, but this is the Munich live performance two years later. The Vienna version is a monster, starting carelessly before the audience had finished applauding, but this one starts after the applause is completely over, but in a simple way. This is a romantic expression, different even from Schubert's as Bruckner's prehistory. The strong brass playing, the sudden ritardant, and the tempo drop that seems to push us off a precipice are staggering. The rustic charm of the Munich Philharmonic's rustic tone, and the expression that is almost as close as it gets to coarseness. It is a true feat of genius. Unfortunately, the sound image is a bit distant and there are some shaky sounds caused by the original tapes, but this is an exceptional performance that fans of the orchestra will want to have on hand.
