At the time, singer\/songwriter\/guitarist James Mercer and drummer Jesse Sandoval had moved from Albuquerque to Portland, Oregon, where they replaced bassist Neal Langford, who had played bass on the first album's signature track, \"New Slang. Dave Hernandez, formerly of Scared Of Chaka, who played bass on the first album's signature song \"New Slang,\" joined the band.The album was recorded in James' basement home studio and later mixed by Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, David Cross, Les Savy Fav, etc.). Released in 2003, the album was awarded Best New Music by Pitchfork and 4 stars by Rolling Stone, NewYork Times, MOJO, Village Voice, SPIN, and others also praised the album.
