Description:

Midori Goto performs Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin at a place associated with Bach. Midori Goto is one of Japan's leading world-class violinists, making her U.S. debut at the age of 11. In 2012, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his debut, he toured Japan performing Bach at temples, shrines, and churches throughout the country. After the tour, they recorded a CD, which featured Bach performances with a strong sense of presence. This video shows Midori Goto performing all of Bach's unaccompanied violin sonatas and partitas in Keten, a place associated with Bach. Bach became court music director of the Margrave Anhalt-Keten in 1717, and spent six years in Keten before his appointment as cantor "Thomas Kantor" of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig in 1723. This cycle of works, composed during this period in Keten, is considered the pinnacle of violin works, as it requires a high level of technique and musicality for the violinist.Midori Goto describes this work in the video. Bach's sonatas and partitas are very rich music with many voices. Even though they are solo performances on one instrument, they don't feel like solos because the many voices respond to each other, pushing and pulling each other. Bach always teaches me this. Listen with your ears and listen with an open mind." She says she first played Bach when she was six or seven years old. But even though she has continued to play, she says she never thinks she fully understands it, and that it is something she will continue to learn forever. Midori Goto's playing technique is undoubtedly the best of the modern era, and her musicality is unparalleled as she reaches her maturity. Her comments like these are a direct reflection of her sincere attitude toward music. This product also contains quality footage that allows the viewer to immerse themselves in the music in a leisurely manner, with serene images throughout, including the lush green streets of Keten, Midori Goto walking with her violin on her back through the quiet town, and the beautiful but unglamorous interior of the Keten Castle.
