Here is the Mahler Cycle with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, where Chailly continues Abbado's vision! Live footage of Riccardo Chailly's inaugural concert as Music Director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in August 2016. The Lucerne Festival Orchestra was founded in 1938 by a group of renowned musicians under the direction of the great conductor Toscanini. In 2003, the late Claudio Abbado took over as conductor, and the orchestra was formed by some of the finest musicians of our time. After Abbado's death in 2014, Andris Nelsons and Bernard Haitink appeared on the scene, but in 2016, Schee officially took over as music director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. The program chosen for this year's concert was Mahler Symphony No. 8. This is the only Mahler cycle that Abbado had been working on that could not be performed. With the inaugural concert by Chailly, the cycle is now complete.Shai's Mahler No. 8 has been recorded live in May 2011 with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, where he was Kapellmeister, as well as in a Mahler Cycle (No. 8 was recorded in 2000) when he was Chief Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw.
