This is a very ambitious CD, a collection of works by 20th century composers who, for one reason or another, have suffered terrible disappointments. Benno Uhlfelder (1868-1946) was born in Bayreuth, Germany. Because of his Jewish background, he was exiled to Argentina from the rise of the Nazis. Maurice Jobert (1900-1940) was a French composer born in Nice, who made his name in film music in the 1930s, but died prematurely at age 40. Wenceslava Kaplerová (1915-1940) was born in Brno. She studied in Prague and then in Paris, where she attracted much attention as a female composer, which was still rare at that time. However, when Germany invaded France, she fled to Montpellier in southern France, where she died of illness at the age of only 25. Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) is known as a French composer because of his long life, but he was of Jewish descent and emigrated to the United States during World War II. Aleksandr "Bob" Tzfasman (1906-1971) was a leading jazz pianist in the Soviet Union. He was also active as a composer, but of course jazz was suppressed in the Soviet Union.His style of mixing old jazz with modern classical music is something that cannot be found in the West. Nikolai Andreyevich Roslavets (1881-1944) was a standard-bearer of the Russian avant-garde, but was later killed off by the Soviet government and the music world, and was not reevaluated until very recently. Jan Michael Horstmann was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1968. After a long career as an opera conductor, he has been the principal conductor of the Schönebeck Central German Chamber Philharmonic since 2019.
