Behn, a close friend of Mahler, was a German musician who studied composition with Bruckner and Rheinberger. Behn appreciated Mahler's music and did all he could to help promote it, especially financially. For example, Behn covered much of the expenses for the premiere of the complete Second Symphony in Berlin on December 13, 1895. Meanwhile, Mahler was also impressed by Behn's compositions, especially his song cycle. When he was entrusted with the manuscript of the completed Symphony No. 2, Behn arranged it for two pianos without informing Mahler, who was surprised and impressed by Behn's arrangement upon his return from a trip to Berlin. Mahler played the first three movements together at Behn's house. Later, this arrangement was rediscovered by Christiane Behn, a descendant of Hermann Behn, and was premiered on November 17, 2008 in Behn's native Hamburg.
