A collection of vocal and piano works by Jean Cartan, who studied under Ducasse and was a student of Messiaen and Duruflé. Born in 1906 and died in 1932, this album contains works for tenor and piano and piano works by Jean Cartan. Jean Cartan, whose father Elie Cartan and brother Henri Cartan were both mathematicians, entered the Paris Conservatory in 1924 and studied under Marcel-Samuel Rousseau, Noël Gallon, and Paul Ducasse, in the same class as Olivier Messiaen and Maurice Duruflé. It is said that his teacher Paul Ducasse appreciated and encouraged his music. Despite his talent, Cartan was afflicted with tuberculosis and died on March 26, 1932, at the age of only 25, leaving behind an unfinished work. Tenor Kaérig Bochet and pianist Thomas Take were so impressed by Cartan's work that they have recorded his vocal and piano pieces, including some that had never been recorded before. While the style of the music shows the influence of Dukas and Roussel, Cartan has also established his own unique worldview. King International
