Harmoniumundi's recording series for Beethoven's 250th anniversary in 2020 and the 200th anniversary of his death in 2027 will begin in 2021 with the first release of \"Missa Solemnis\" conducted by Jacobs. Beethoven's \"Missa solemnis\" is a major work from the composer's final years, and is also known for being extremely difficult to interpret, making it a test of a conductor's ability. Beethoven began writing this Mass as a gift for Archduke Rudolf, with whom he had a close friendship, to celebrate his appointment as archbishop, but in the end he was unable to complete it in time, and the entire work was finally premiered four years after he was appointed archbishop. What emerged was a monumental work of art that combined Catholic liturgy, dramatic expressiveness, contemplative prayer, anthemic expression, archaic elements, and symphonic structure into one. It was, above all, the composer's struggle to create a work that transcended the framework of the Mass. In this recording, Jacobs places the chorus on either side of the orchestra, with the four soloists behind the orchestra.Until the end of the nineteenth century, the chorus was placed beside, even in front of, the orchestra in oratorio performances, and never in the back. This had great advantages: first, it made it easier for the chorus to sing difficult passages, and second, it allowed the audience to better understand Beethoven's painstaking text. Also, placing the four soloists behind the orchestra is like a chorus of angels. I suspect this is the way Beethoven dreamed it up. The earthly chorus in the front and the angelic voices in the back respond to each other, creating a dynamic contrast.\" The high technique of the orchestra and the singers, as well as Jacobs and his colleagues, made it possible to realize a superb recording.
