The quartet has previously performed the Brahms String Quartets No. 1 and 2. The quartet has recorded Schumann, Hindemith, Bartók, and Hartmann for ECM to critical acclaim. Their performance of Schumann was named \"Recording of the Year\" by Gramophone magazine, and their performances of Hindemith and Bartók were praised by The Sunday Times as \"tremendously exquisite. This time it is the first two string quartets that reveal Brahms' mastery of the form, with their contemplation and dramatic urgency. Brahms confided to a close friend that he had written more than 20 quartets before these two, but he burned them all, so these are two of the three published works in all.Recorded with the Züttmaier Quartet's characteristic intensity, freedom through memorization, and deep, rich expressiveness, this performance is a fresh and deeply felt interpretation of these important chamber works. Unfortunately, this recording is the last of the quartet with cellist Christian Elliott (1984-2025). It was a pleasure to work with him on the ever-changing character of the voices, to feel the meaning of every phrase and to make it come alive. The loss of him is painful - Christiane, we miss you. \"Founded in 1994 by Austrian conductor and violinist Thomas Zoetmaier, the Zoetmaier Quartet is one of the world's most respected string quartet. Highly regarded for their thoughtful and original interpretations, they play with great expressive power. They have a deep understanding of standard repertoire as well as contemporary music, which they perform equally compellingly.Produced by Manfred Eicher, it was recorded in 2021 at the Breibach Concert Hall in Germany. The booklet includes an essay in German and English by Wolfgang Stahr.
