The opera \"Luomo\" was first performed at the Bayreuth Frontier Count Opera House in 1754 during a visit by King Friedrich the Great of Prussia. Whenever King Friedrich the Great visited his sister Wilhelmine von Prussia, the Bayreuth frontier count, it was customary for a new opera to be performed in honor of the guest. There, instead of allegorically displaying her power and wisdom to the Prussian king, Wilhelmine chose a performance that praised the superiority of the female soul, which generously overlooks the faults of men, and also referred to the philosophy of Zarathustra, the founder of the Persian religion. For \"Luomo\" (Man or His Man), Wilhelmine wrote the libretto and commissioned the composer Andrea Bernasconi (1706-1784), deputy music director of the Bavarian court in Munich, to translate the work into Italian and compose the music. More than 200 years later, after years of extensive research at Bayreuth University and elsewhere, the work has been revived at the same Bayreuth Frontier Count's Opera House where it was first performed, with Dorothee Oberlinger, Ensemble 1700, and an outstanding cast of soloists.This varied music beautifully contrasts tragic and humorous elements in the moving and captivating style of Italian Baroque opera.
