In 1972, he moved to New York City, where he eventually found a place for artistic expression on the local cabaret stage. His look and voice reflected the royalty of the New Wave scene, and he had the vibe of Andy Warhol's Factory (Warhol's studio) period and beyond. He appeared at venues such as Max's Kansas City (a New York City nightclub and restaurant) surrounded by friends from the underground scene.In 1979, in the midst of the Berlin era, David Bowie, who was a promising young talent, took notice of him and selected him as a backup singer for a special on NBC TV's \"Saturday Night Live.
