Description:
This is the second restored recording of the "Responsorium" by Alessandro Scarlatti, the founder of the Neapolitan school of music. Italian composer Alessandro Scarlatti, known for his operas and cantatas, is considered the founder of the Neapolitan school of 18th century opera. In 1702, he traveled with his son Domenico Scarlatti to Florence and Rome, and the following year became assistant conductor of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. He was appointed music director in 1707 and died in Naples in 1725. The "Responsorium for Holy Week - Good Friday" recorded here is the second recording of Alessandro Scarlatti's "Responsorium" by the choir La Stagione Armonica, following the 2018 release of "Responsorium for Holy Week - Holy Saturday".The choir's artistic director, Sergio Balestracci, after conducting various studies, including musical research, on a manuscript of unknown authorship, determined that the score was a responsorium composed by Alessandro Scarlatti for the Grand Duke of Tuscany in the early 18th century, and made the world premiere recording of the work after revising the score himself ("Responsorium" is a type of Christian chant translated as "response" in Japanese. The "Responsorium" is a type of Christian chant that consists of a solo singer and chorus, and the chorus sings in response to the solo singer. In this album, the motets and organ solos composed by Alessandro Scarlatti are incorporated before, during, and after the responsorium to add contrast and recreate the actual mass form. La Stagione Armonica is a choir founded in 1991 by the madrigalists of Padua's Centro di Musica Antica. Its artistic director, Sergio Balestracci, has a long experience as a conductor and teacher as well as a musicologist of Renaissance and Baroque music. In addition to working with specialists in the baroque repertoire and with Italian soloists and instrumentalists, the group has given excellent performances with Savard, Leonhardt, Dantone, and others. She has also worked with Riccardo Muti since 2009, including at the Salzburg Festival. Sony Music
