Description:

The New Shostakovich World of Tugan Sohiyev's Inquisitiveness and CuriosityTugan Sohiyev has served as Music Director of the Orchestre National de la Capitole de Toulouse and as Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Bolshoi Opera House, and until the 2015/16 season as Music Director of the Deutsche Symphony Orchestra Berlin He was also Music Director of the Deutsches Symphonieorchester Berlin until the 2015/16 season. In addition to conducting at the Bolshoi Theatre, he has been a guest conductor with the Berlin Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, and other world-class opera houses and top orchestras. This recording for Warner Classics features "Shostakovich: Symphony No. 8". Formerly known as the "Stalingrad Symphony," this work has a multilayered character with overtones of pessimism, a sense of parody, and a spirit of aphorism, even in its grandiose and intense sound, as a projection of the harshness, sorrow, and emptiness of war. Sohiyev's mentor, the renowned conductor and educator Ilya Musin, was the second performance conductor of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7, following its premiere.Inheriting his teachings, the ensemble is formed as a whole by distributing all instruments in a well-balanced manner down to the smallest detail. The changes in color and lightness and darkness of the minuscule fragments of sound are exquisite. The tension is sustained and full of energy. In this performance, Sohiyev opens up new horizons.
