The Sprafon label is proud to present the complete works for piano by Viktor Karabis (1923-2006), one of the leading composers of the Czech Republic. Following the three sonatas (Cello Sonata, Clarinet Sonata, Violin Sonata) (SU 4210), this collection of his complete piano works is now available. As in the previous three sonatas, Ivo Kahanek plays the piano. Karabis studied with Frobil at the Prague Conservatory from 1945 to 1948 and with Zietky at the Academy of Music in 1952, and his works for orchestra, chamber music, and piano are in the neo-classical style. His piano works include three sonatas and a collection of smaller pieces, which he composed from the time he was a student at the Prague Conservatory until late in his life. His works are characterized by intense expression and lean musicality, and are filled with a radiant sensitivity to color and acoustics. Karabis' wife is harpsichordist Zuzana Ruzhchikova (1927-2017). Kahanek, who was strongly impressed by Karabis' works, will perform them with all his heart. King International
