Born in London and based in the southern hemisphere in Australia, Gusens was principal conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and director of the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, where he left behind works with a French character influenced by Ravel, Debussy, and Stravinsky, all of which were his forte.
