Giulini, November 1993, Live in Florence—a complete first-time release! His signature works: Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 and “Pictures at an Exhibition”!! The great conductor Carlo Maria Giulini (1914–2005), whose 100th birthday was in 2014, was, of course, an Italian born in Italy; however, after resigning as music director of La Scala in 1956, he was not very active in Italy. Florence, however, was a city he visited relatively frequently; from his Florence debut in 1945 until February 1999 (after he had already retired), when he conducted a youth orchestra, he conducted concerts and operas in Florence for over half a century. This CD features live recordings from concerts held on November 19 and 20, 1993, at the Teatro Verdi in Florence. Mussorgsky’s *Pictures at an Exhibition* is, as you know, one of Giulini’s absolute signature works. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 was also a work that Giulini enjoyed performing, but the only existing recording is the 1956 EMI recording; this recording, made nearly half a century later, is therefore particularly valuable. Although the orchestra—which typically performs opera—appears to be struggling somewhat with this unfamiliar repertoire, they are clinging desperately to Giulini’s grand musical vision, just a few years before his retirement.
