Featuring internationally acclaimed violist Timothy Ridout, the quartet brings fresh interpretations and new depth to the inner voices of these two masterpieces. Composed by Mozart in 1787, these two renowned quintets hold a special place in the chamber music repertoire; they retain the lightness of the Galant style while also offering a rich depth of emotion that is often introspective. The Takács String Quartet was formed in Hungary in 1975 and is currently based in the United States. For founding member and retiring cellist András Fier, this recording will be his last. The album was recorded at London’s prestigious Wigmore Hall and pays tribute to Ralph “Chris” Christophersen (1937–2025), a close friend and longtime supporter of the Takács Quartet. “It is truly astonishing that these two masterpieces have received so little attention, and that Mozart himself was so underappreciated.
