Description:
Superb performances and superb engineering, capturing the beautiful sound of the Concertgebouw. All eight works conducted by Haitink, with Beinum's Berceuse heroique included as a bonus. Newly transferred from the original analogue master tapes held in the country of origin. Eight Debussy recordings (originally three albums) made for PHILIPS by Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, gathered on two CDs. They have previously appeared individually and as part of the two-disc DUO series, but this is the first time they have been collected together with each of the original sleeve designs. Also included as a bonus is the Berceuse heroique conducted by Eduard van Beinum in a 1957 stereo recording with the same orchestra. Haitink's Debussy recordings are famous as performances and recordings from the LP era at its height. They deserve recognition not only as magnificent examples of analogue engineering at its point of full maturity in the late 1970s, but as a kind of ideal realisation of the art of recorded sound itself. A tempo sense grounded in a poised, unhurried sonority, precisely controlled articulation, careful and finely shaded expression, the outstanding technical command of the individual players of the day, the superb acoustic of the recording venue, and the fully realised quality of late-analogue engineering combine to place these among the very finest of all Debussy recordings. For this reissue we again returned to the original analogue master tapes held in the country of origin and made a new 192kHz/24bit digital transfer, achieving greater detail and a wider dynamic range than ever before. The original sleeve designs have been retained, and the booklet contains a new common introductory essay alongside the previously published notes. This special edition of Vintage+plus comprises five titles in all.
