Description:
Internationally Renowned Chinese Conductor Makes First Recording of New Musical Drama Exploring the Tragedy and Hope of Real History The first recording of American composer Aaron Zigman’s new oratorio, *Emigre*, will be released by Deutsche Grammophon. This two-CD set features a two-act oratorio inspired by real events and crafted over the course of five years, with a libretto by Grammy and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Mark Campbell and additional lyrics by songwriter Brock Walsh. The performance features internationally acclaimed Chinese conductor Ron Yu and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, of which he is the music director; tenors Matthew White and Arnold Livingston-Gais; sopranos Meigui Zhang and Diana Newman; mezzo-sopranos Huiling Zhu, Shen Yang, and Andrew Dwan, members of the New York Philharmonic Chorus, and the Lanzhou Concert Hall Choir—for a total of 190 participants. During World War II, the people of Shanghai took in Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Europe. It is said that their number reached as high as 30,000. *Emigre* depicts two Jewish brothers who arrived in Shanghai as refugees in 1938 and set out to build new lives. Otto continues to carry his fate in his heart, while Josef seeks a new way of life and falls in love with Lisa, a Chinese woman who has recovered from the trauma of losing her mother in the Nanjing Massacre. It is an epic tale of love and loss. “‘Emigre’ shows how people can coexist during difficult times. I am very proud of the people of Shanghai who welcomed those in need. I have worked with musicians from all over the world, but I have never thought about where they come from. Music is our common language. It is the best way to convey a message of hope.” — Ron Yu Universal Music/IMS
